It is what you read when you don't have to that determines what you will be when you can't help it.

Content Area Literacy was a class that was near and dear to my heart. As an avid reader, I enjoyed learning different ways to enhance all content areas with reading skills and opportunities. This is a copy of a mathematics lesson plan I created for use in my fieldwork in a 5th grade classroom. I enjoyed finding a book that would be engaging as well as help teach a concept (fractions) that was causing many of the student’s distress as they struggled to understand. This is a lesson that I would definitely use again in similar circumstances.

Spring 2014
The Bibliography project from Children’s Literature is an excellent example of what I find to be inspiring and engaging. The books in this document span reading ages from beginner to advanced teen. I have read, and loved, each and every book on this list and they are all likely to find a home on my classroom bookshelf. One of the greatest gifts a teacher can give students is the joy of reading. In my fieldwork I have already experienced students interest an enthusiasm increasing dramatically when they learn the books being shared are from my home rather than the school library. I will continue to embrace the strategy of connecting my love of books to my classroom.
