It is what you read when you don't have to that determines what you will be when you can't help it.

Proficency 5: Pedagogy
Unit Plan - Oregon Trail:
-
Social Studies in Elementary Education - EDU 3312
-
Spring 2015
This 5th grade Social Studies Unit plan was created with learners of all levels and abilities in mind. It is heavily influenced by strategies for English Language Learners that are helpful to students of all abilities. Opportunities for students to be creative as they explore Western Expansion are consistently evident. The unit also reflects my preference for incorporating both literature and the arts into other content areas to create stimulating and interactive classroom experiences
Teacher Tool - Story Stew:

Fall 2013
One of the first Teacher Tools I created while at Concordia also happens to be one of my favorites. Students are involved not only in the use of the tool, but in its creation as well. Inside the box are three different color cards. Students will fill out 3 sets of all colors and add them to the selections already in the box before beginning to draw cards. These cards are meant to help students who struggle with finding writing ideas. Students enjoy the often silly, and sometimes sad, story situations that are possible with the random drawing of character, scene, and conflict. I believe it is important to have tools such as this available for student to use at their own discretion. Whenever possible, they should be encouraged to take ownership of their learning.
